When does a body pattern help an animal hide?
The same animal can be easy to notice in one habitat and harder to notice in another.

What should you look for?
What made the animal easier or harder to notice?
- 01Similar colors reduced contrast
- 02A matching pattern broke up the body outline
- 03Changing the habitat changed the same body’s visibility
02
Why does this happen?
Camouflage changes contrast
Color, pattern, light, distance, and the viewer’s visual system all affect how much an animal stands out.
It is not invisibility
The animal remains visible. A useful pattern in one habitat may stand out in another.
This screen uses human-visible color contrast and does not reproduce every animal’s vision.
