When does invisible water vapor become a cloud?

Air that rises can cool until tiny liquid droplets appear around particles.

01

What should you look for?

When did droplets appear?

  1. 01Cooling rising air
  2. 02Lowering humidity
  3. 03Removing all water vapor

02

Why does this happen?

01

Rising air expands and cools

Lower pressure lets rising air expand, which lowers its temperature and can bring it to saturation.

02

Clouds are droplets or ice

Invisible vapor condenses on tiny airborne nuclei into visible droplets; the vapor itself is not the white cloud.

The lapse-rate and dew-point calculations are simplified educational approximations.

03

Move it before reading the answer

Change altitude, starting temperature, and humidity. Watch vapor, nuclei, and droplets separately.
