How can we tell that continents moved?

Matching fossils and rock belts appear on continents now separated by oceans.

What should you look for?

Which layers still matched?

  1. 01Matching fossils and rocks
  2. 02Modern country borders
  3. 03Ocean color

02

Why does this happen?

01

Several clues form an argument

Coastline fit, matching fossils, and continuous rock belts together supported the idea that continents had moved.

02

Plate tectonics explains the motion

Modern plate tectonics describes moving lithospheric plates; “continental drift” alone did not explain the mechanism.

Shapes and motion are schematic and time-compressed, not a geographic reconstruction.

03

Move it before reading the answer

Move through geological time and toggle coastline, fossil, and rock evidence.
